Scottish luxury hotel staff ‘lose HUNDREDS of pounds in tips’ after service charge changes

HOTEL workers claim they are losing hundreds of pounds in tips following changes to service charges at a luxury hotel.

The Unite union said around 60 workers were protesting an ‘opaque’ system of handing out tens of thousands of pounds in tips and service charges at the Cameron House Hotel on Loch Lomond.

He said bar and restaurant staff have found themselves to be between £200 and £300 a month since hotel management introduced a 10 per cent service charge in January.

Unite is now calling for the creation of a new “tipping committee” made up of bar and restaurant staff to oversee the “democratic and proportionate” distribution of service charges and card tips.

The hotel said it is paying 100% of the service charge to its staff and working with the union to reach an agreement as soon as possible.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Minimum wage workers are losing hundreds of pounds in tips at Cameron House, one of Scotland’s top luxury hotels.

“It’s a staggering abuse – a posh resort for the wealthy who steal tips from minimum wage workers.

“The workers are fighting back and they have the strong support of Unite. The hotel faces significant reputational damage unless it acts to end this injustice.”

The union claimed that the hotel withholds 100% of all card tips that are not distributed by the end of the year.

He claimed Cameron House is also keeping 15% service charge to pay all staff, not just bar and waiters, a Christmas bonus.
