Barnstaple’s four-star Park Hotel gained an extra star just temporarily when Hollywood star Idris Elba stopped in to recharge his car and have lunch. Hotel manager Steve Ashford couldn’t resist asking the Luther star for a quick selfie.
Senior assistant manager Katie Watts told DevonLive he was not filming in the area – he had made a personal visit. She said: ‘He wasn’t staying, just passing through, and he stopped to charge his car and have some lunch.
“It was definitely a surprise. He’s a lovely guy and he was really talkative. It was exciting to have him here.

When the hotel shared the selfie on its Facebook page, fans were stunned to learn he was at Barnstaple. “Omg I’m disgusted I missed him,” one said. “Oh, I really wish I was there,” said another.
Earlier this year, the British actor, who is perhaps best known for his roles in Luther and The Wire, said he planned to focus more on his music. He performs as a DJ under the name DJ Big Driis or Idris – even as a DJ at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding – and as an R&B musician.
After several appearances on British TV shows including The Bill, Silent Witness and Family Affairs, the London-born entertainer became a big star in Hollywood when he portrayed Russell “Stringer” Bell in HBO’s crime drama The Wire. Following this, Elba starred in some of the biggest films of the past 20 years.
His acting credits include the role of Heimdall in three of Thor’s films as well as two of Marvel’s Avenger films – Age of Ultron and Infinity War. He also played main villain Krall/Balthazar Edison in Star Trek Beyond and also starred in The Suicide Squad and Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw.
His voice has also appeared in a number of animated films, including Zootropolis, Finding Dory, and the live-action/CGI remake of The Jungle Book. His voice can also be heard in theaters right now as he plays Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
