Britain’s top boss is offering hotel staff £200,000 for their ‘excellent service’ and ‘hard work’ during the summer holiday season

A HOTEL owner dubbed Britain’s best boss has given his staff almost £200,000 as a reward for their ‘hard work’ over the summer.

Philema Hospitality Management, the family business that owns the Fistral Beach Hotel and the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay, Cornwall, is dividing the money among its 325 staff.

The company, which also runs Boringdon Hall Hotel & Gaia Spa in Devon, has seen an increase in guest numbers over the summer season.

The surge in numbers came as turned away tourists booked sun-seeking holidays in the first summer since pandemic restrictions ended.

Philema said her staff had provided “great service” amid growing demand for UK holidays.

The £182,166 bonus payment was split between staff who worked for the hotel group between April and September this year.

They also received commissions, service fees, and manager bonuses on top of the extra prize pool.

The company said individual bonuses were based on the number of hours worked and therefore varied on a case-by-case basis.

In addition to annual bonuses, employees receive benefits including off-peak spa and gym membership, hotel and restaurant discounts, double pay at Christmas and New Years, and a additional vacation day for each year they have worked for Philema from five to 15 years.

On top of all that, the company hosts “Employee Appreciation Days,” which include vouchers and other treats randomly distributed to team members.

Laura Cameron, Philema’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “We appreciate that the past few years have been difficult for the hospitality industry and with the increase in demand for stays, our teams have had to go above and beyond to offer a service outstanding to every guest who visited us this summer.

“We wanted to make sure that their hard work was rewarded and that their commitment to our family business was felt.

“We have been extremely fortunate over the past 12-18 months and have managed to retain a large portion of our talented staff and invest in the future of our team.”

She added: “We currently have six people on apprenticeship and we are looking to expand that next year.

“We have had tremendous success with our management trainee program this year and we plan to relaunch it for the next intake in January 2023.”
