The hilarious series of a teacher and body positivity advocate denouncing hopelessly inadequate hotel facilities for tall travelers is a viral hit on TikTok.
Mary Fran Donnelly’s “Traveling Fat Person” series shows layouts of different hotels that are uncomfortable for a tall person. In the video, the 27-year-old social studies professor is seen joking about design flaws in hotels with her sister.
“Let’s take a look at the bathroom,” Donnelley says in the opening of her first video. “Do you want to pee or poo?” Don’t worry, you’ll barely be your size, ”she says of a dresser.
Then she walks over to the shower and tries to use the hotel towel to dry off. She shows how much it does not match her body.
She also tries to use other amenities such as the seating area on the balcony. She says, “After a swim, maybe you want to go and sit on the balcony.” But she ends up not knowing if the “beautiful table and the beautiful chair” will “shelter” her.
“I’m not too sure,” she said.
“I get away with humor … I didn’t care about a situation that is very real stress for big and tall people … my sister and I could only laugh at the absurdity” , said Donnelley. Buzzfeed.
“I don’t travel alone because I worry about strangers being upset to sit next to me on a plane. [I also wonder] will the seat be uncomfortable? Will the seat belt fit? Will the towel go to the hotel? Will the pool chairs hold me back? Will the tables in the hotel restaurant be comfortable? she said, describing the daily challenges that so many people face on a daily basis.
The TikToker also points out that these challenges often don’t cross the minds of most people in the travel and hospitality industry.
“But I think it’s about time they did. Body shapes and image have become so relevant in recent years that there is no excuse as to why the hospitality and travel industries cannot begin to re-evaluate their practices. Fat and plus-size people deserve to be seen as worthy human beings in an industry that should meet everyone’s size and physical needs, ”she said.
The series has been viewed by over 6.4 million users.
